Junior Eat Well Scientists' STEM Summer Programme for Children 2023
Cooking x Food Science Experience
With food science and low-carbon diets as the theme, the Junior Eat Well Scientists’ STEM Summer Programme allows children to be a little scientist and chef through interactive games, food-science experiments, artistic creation and cookie-making. During the half-day camp, youngsters will experience a taste of green living and a low-carbon diet, which can inspire their understanding, curiosity and appreciation of nature.
Solar Oven: Model Design and Applications
Children will explore different designs and applications of solar ovens and then reflect on the impact of energy use on the environment in daily life.
Food Chromatics: Magic Turmeric Canvas
Through drawing on a magic turmeric canvas with different edible ingredients of different pH values, children will explore the scientific principles behind the colour change and cultivate their exploration of spirit and creativity. And by recording a mini lab report, children will learn to observe the subtle colour changes meticulously, which can enhance their observational abilities and appreciation of nature’s aesthetics.
Cookie Decryption: Exploration of Volume and Density
By harvesting seasonal herbs and making vegan flourless oatmeal cookies, children are encouraged to make a connection with soil and food. During the cookie-making session, they will also explore the volume and density of the ingredients and discuss the concept of food mileage and carbon emissions.
